HJ Lea Oakes Ltd are suppliers of top-quality animal and livestock feeds, serving farmers across a wide area in Cheshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and North Wales. We are currently looking for an experienced Mill Manager to join our team in delivering outstanding customer service. This vacancy is based in our Aston Mill, near Nantwich, Cheshire.

Job Description and Profile

It is a diverse role that involves day to day running of a busy animal feed mill. The role includes managing staff, managing raw materials stocks and ensuring quality of the finished products and efficient running of the mill.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing the team of Mill Operatives ensuring adequate resource availability to enable the smooth and efficient running of the site.
  • Staff management, including payroll preparation; recruitment; disciplinary procedures, communication with staff, developing training plans for staff.
  • Responsible for planning and overseeing production of animal feed.
  • Ordering raw materials and packaging ensuring adequate stock levels; stock control.
  • Maintaining high standards of hygiene across the site.
  • Driving Health & Safety in the manufacturing area ensuring all H&S procedures & policies are adhered to at all times & ensuring all team members are aware of the H&S responsibilities.
  • Ensuring that Feed Safety requirements and Company procedures and policies are adhered to at all times.
  • Ensuring Quality requirements are met at all times.
  • Ensuring the appropriate maintenance of the mill and equipment.
  • Annual reporting to Environmental Agency.
  • Liaising with other Departments: Transport, Raw materials, Customer services, Technical, Engineering


  • Full time position (40 hours a week, normally between 9am-5pm Monday and Friday, but might at times require some weekend work and being available to take out of hours calls).

Essential Requirements


  • Highly organised person, able to multitask and work under pressure in fast-paced environment
  • Prior experience of managing busy manufacturing site is required
  • Prior experience of animal feed industry will be a strong advantage
  • Good communication skills, good command of spoken and written English
  • Good numeracy and literacy
  • Good computer skills – the role involves working on several industry specific software products
  • The successful candidate will be energetic, friendly and calm under pressure
  • Ability to lead as well as work well as part of a team, including cooperation with other departments
