2. Can I create my own formula blend?

A. Yes, telephone us on 01270 782222.  Contact Ian Gittins or Andrew Stone in the Technical office.

3. Where can I pick up small lots of feed and pet food from H J Lea Oakes?

A. Visit the Petfood Superstores at Wheelock or Congleton, or visit Aston mill.

5. I have been told that I must buy assured feeds – what does this mean?

A. Many food processors such as dairies run assurance schemes such as the National Dairy Farm Assurance Scheme (NDFAS). They need to be sure that feed is fully traceable and quality assured. At H J Lea Oakes we are fully aware that our feeds are an integral part of the human food chain so we have made sure that they are all fully assured under the Universal  Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS). The UFAS acronym is printed on each feed label.

6. Can you supply non-GM feed?

A. Yes, we have a dedicated non-GM mill at Congleton in Cheshire which manufactures both non-GM and Organic feeds. more Organic FAQs below

Organic Feed FAQs

1. Can I buy Organic Feeds from H J Lea Oakes Limited?

A. Yes, we produce a full range of Organic Feeds for Pigs, Poultry, Dairy, Beef and Sheep. All our organic feeds are approved by Organic Farmers & Growers for use in organic farming systems in the UK.

2. Are H J Lea Oakes an approved organic supplier?

A. Yes, as feed manufacturers we must be approved by an organic certifying body and must be independently audited.

3. What do I feed during conversion?

A. We recommend an approved non-organic diet (such as Heritage Conversion diets for dairy cows) during the whole of the conversion period. Once you achieve organic status we recommend an approved organic feed from our Organic range. (The diet must not contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) from the start of the conversion period.)

4. How do I know which organic dairy diet to feed?

A. All the H J Lea Oakes organic diets are carefully designed to meet the requirements of the DEFRA rules.  We are happy to advise.  If in doubt, contact us or consult your organic body.

5. What about organic beef and sheep diets?

A. We offer organic Allrounder at 16 and 18% protein levels which can be used for feeding ewes as well as growing cattle.  We also offer Organic Calf, Lamb & Rearer Pellets with 18% protein for young calves and lambs and a 6mm nut at 17% protein to follow on.  All diets meet the DEFRA requirements on this basis (subject to the correct feeding level).

6. How good are H J Lea Oakes organic diets?

A. From a nutritional point of view, the high (organic) wheat and maize content of these diets means that they are all high energy diets. Because only expeller proteins are used, there is a high level of natural oils left in the feed, and no other oils are added. This consolidates a naturally high energy level in the rations. Protein quality in the diets is superb, because the diets include organic soya expeller, organic sunflower expeller and organic peas.

7. Are organic diets mineralised?

A. Yes, all the organic compounds from H J Lea Oakes are mineralised with limestone, salt, and (where required) calcined magnesite and di-calcium phosphate.

8. What about vitamins and trace elements?

A. Standard organic ruminant compounds contain no added vitamins or trace elements. These are 'restricted' under organic regulations for ruminants, however  dairy diets are available from H J Lea Oakes with added trace elements as an option. A derogation from your organic body must be held.  Monogastric feeds contain vitamins and trace elements as standard and no derogation need be applied for.

9. What is the non-GM status of organic feed?

A. Organic compounds must not be made from materials known to contain GM material. We check our feed materials to make sure that no GM materials are used in the mill.
